The Netherlands dropped from eleventh to thirteenth place in 2002 when ranked worldwide by its success in making government services accessible through the internet and attractive to its users. This was revealed by consultancy Accenture in its annual study on e-Government globally, which assigned Canada, Singapore and USA the top positions.

Despite having a good internet policy in place, the Dutch (who had already slipped from seventh place the previous year) have failed to increase significantly the quantity and quality of their online government services, according to Accenture.

Two general elections in the space of a year and the absence of an ICT minister were among the causes cited by the report.

What the Dutch government needs, concludes the report, is a sound e-government policy and a good implementation with clear priorities, if it is to improve its online services and close the gap, saving it much money in the long run and its citizens much time.
