The Victorian government has appointed the State’s first chief information officer and chief technology officer. These appointments break new ground for Australian states and territories.

Patrick Hannan will commence as CIO on December 8. He will “assist the Bracks government to deliver on its e-government strategy by providing authoritative advice and strong leadership of information and communication technology matters across government,” said Marsha Thomson, Information and Communication Technology Minister The Office of the CIO will focus on the government’s internal ICT policy. Multimedia Victoria will retain responsibility for implementing the Connecting Victoria industry development policy, Thomson explained.

Hannan was previously CIO of the Australian Defence Force. Tony Aitkenhead will take up the CTO role on December 1. He will be responsible for the management and delivery of whole-of-government ICT contracts and projects such as the Telecommunications Purchasing and Management Strategy, Project Rosetta and Victoria Online.

Aitkenhead previously held various senior IT roles in the Victorian public service. He was involved in the development of the whole-of-government ICT Architectural Standards and ICT Standardisation Project.
