Blogs and podcasts are set to become part of Australia's e-government agenda as the federal government pushes to make itself more accessible.

"In the past 12 to 18 months we have seen an increase in the number of people that deal only with government online," Special Minister of State Gary Nairn said

We see that increasing dramatically over the coming years."

Mr Nairn said the Government was wary of the risks of opening itself online up to public submissions. "It's probably trickier than it first seems," he said. "You have to be wary of the whackos that like to get involved.

"But as long as we can set things up and manage it well I think we it can be quite valuable in getting people to interact that way with government."

In a speech to the Information Online conference for librarians today, Mr Nairn will discuss the effect of the trend towards social networking and interactivity on the internet, on how governments deal with citizens.

Mr Nairn said there were parallels in the challenges faced by libraries and government in being providers of information in the online age.
