Local and foreign tourists in Thailand will soon be able to access free Wi-Fi at more than 1,600 hotspots in tourist destinations nationwide.

Under ‘ICT Free Wi-Fi for Tourism’ campaign, ICT Ministry in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism and Sports signed a MOU last week to allow TOT and CAT Telecom—the state’s telcos to install hi-speed internet at 1,615 hotspots in major tourist attractions across the country.

The project is a part of Smart Thailand campaign, and aligns with the government’s strategy to promote economy via domestic tourism.

“This move is to support the government’s policy on tourism that targets two trillion (US$ 64.6 billion) in an annual tourism revenue by 2015,” said ICT Minister Gp Capt Anudith Nakornthap.

Of the 1,615, 253 routers will be put in Bangkok, 446 in the Central region, 201 in the Eastern region, 323 in the Southern region, 325 in the Northern region, and another 67 in the North Eastern region.

The free WiFi is not only to drive the economy but also to achieve the MICT’s goal of providing hi-speed internet to 80 per cent of Thai households by 2015, the ICT Minister said.
