As Japan grapples with the issue of how to address privacy issues, the five-year-old Japan-U.S. Privacy and Data Protection Program today launched an important new bilingual information source: the "Japan Privacy Resource" (JPR), which is available at no cost at www.privacyexchange.org.

"Like the world's other democracies, Japan is now grappling with a central dilemma of the Information Age -- how to reap the powerful benefits of information technology in business and government, while also safeguarding citizen and consumer privacy," said Dr. Alan Westin, Director of CSLR's Japan-U.S. Privacy & Data Protection Program and the new JPR. "And this unfolds at a time of major social, technological, institutional, and political change in Japan." Japan Privacy Resource Benefits

Via e-mail, the JPR offers a free, bi-weekly "NewsFlash" of the latest Japanese privacy developments in English and Japanese, selecting what is important from the flow of Japanese media reports.

Visitors to JPR can also take advantage of the following continuously updated databases in the JPR Library:

  • an extensive database of relevant Japanese privacy laws and regulations
  • a database of privacy policies from Japanese companies and U.S. companies operating in Japan
  • links to important surveys of Japanese consumer attitudes about privacy issues
  • a comprehensive collection of white papers and reports on privacy and data protection in Japan, from government, academic, industry, consumer and other sources
  • detailed descriptions of hard-to-find privacy-related lawsuits
  • a convenient collection of contact information for Japanese industry associations and advocacy groups
  • a comprehensive collection of materials relating to privacy in Japanese e-Government
  • examples from the privacy laws and guidelines of other democratic nations of value for Japan to consider
  • editorials from Dr. Westin about aspects of privacy developments in Japan.
Free access to the JPR is available now.
