The collaboration of Estonia and Japan was discussed during a meeting in Toyko, mainly focused on the further development of the IT sector in both countries.

During the meeting between the Prime Minister of Estonia, Andrus Ansip and the Head of Japanese Government, Yuki Hatoyama that took place on the 15th of February, the discussion focused mainly on collaboration of public sectors for e-services with only minor mentions about other issues such as an intensification in the economic collaboration and communications.

In addition, Hatoyama was also interested in applications for e-government and the Estonian ID card system while he suggested Estonia to adopt euro from the beginning of next year as, he said, “ I hope that joining the euro zone will lend further impetus to Estonia’s development.

Later, Ansip met with Japan’s Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, Kazuhiro Haraguchi. Internet-based public services and cyber security were the main topics as Haraguchi noticed that Estonia has valuable experience in the area of cyber defence with the addressed NATO’s cyber defence center in Tallinn and its concerned achieved reputations in this following sector.

And the strength and effectiveness of the Estonian-Japanese cooperation does not show only in IT related projects since both countries cooperated addressing the healthcare system in Afghanistan which indicates to the great collaboration and international relation of Estonia and Japan.

But yet, the relations between two countries will be more strengthen up as next year will be the 20th anniversary of the re-establishment of Estonia-Japan diplomatic ties.
