Alistair Darling, the DfT transport secretary, this weekend hinted in an interview that a nationwide satellite tracking system could be used within a decade to track cars in the UK, allowing Government to scrap fuel tax and introduce a tax-per-mile-driven replacement.
"Top-of-the-range cars have got satellite navigation kits fitted almost as standard now, Darling said. In another 10 years I expect every car will be fitted with this equipment. So it makes sense to see whether or not you cant use that to good advantage and give drivers a better deal." Darling is expected to detail government plans on road pricing at a Social Market Foundation event. Darling is expected to present a bill in the current parliament to set up a pilot project.
