Transforming Government since 2001
A new report from SocITM, which represents IT managers in local authorities, suggests that e-government targets could be missed unless public bodies find a way to prove people’s identities online. Applauding SocITMs call to “act now”, Equifax, a leader in the provision of online verification services and digital certification, reassures councils that introducing authentication processes need not be the implementation headache many fear. December 2005 is the deadline for e-service delivery for local authorities. The SocITM report reveals that many councils are confused about which direction to take and worried about meeting the deadline. One of the most important issues facing councils is authentication – verifying the identity of the person on the other end of an electronic interaction – including citizens, businesses, employees or partner organizations.

Neil Lewis, head of ID & Fraud services at Equifax comments, “ID fraud and theft is a very real threat and as local authorities prepare to take their services online it is essential they have the right authentication processes in place. They need to be sure that the person at the other end of a computer is who they say they are. Equifax offers a range of services to help both the private and public sectors quickly and reliably verify identities online and comply with regulatory requirements and Government ID standards stipulated by the e-Government Unit.”

Equifax’s online digital certification service, SecureMark, is already an integral part of the Government Gateway, a centralised registering service for e-government services. And Equifax also provides innovative products such as eTrail and eIDverifier, which offer fast, effective online authentication systems.

“Recognising the critical importance of online authentication services, Equifax is leading the way in creating fast and effective verification systems,” concludes Neil Lewis. “With the December 2005 deadline looming, local authorities stand to benefit from quality authentication services which will help them identify high risk applicants, authenticate individuals online, predict potential fraud and remain compliant with e-Government Unit’s ID standards and anti-money laundering legislation. Using our expertise as custodians of consumer information, Equifax is able to advise and support the public sector as it seeks to protect itself from ID theft and fraud.”
