These "amazing" statistics show a real appetite by UK citizens to "embrace this future", says Tim Kelsey, NHS Director of Patients and Information.
The NHS needs to take advantage of this, to enable citizens to take more control, to encourage them to become part of a "new knowledge partnership" where they can find out about local services and what people think of them.
But also, Kelsey explains, to look up credible information about different conditions and find help to directly manage them.
This is not going to happen overnight, says Kelsey, and the NHS will need to engage external help to make complex data and information accessible, through data visualisation and other means, to ordinary people - including NHS managers.
