Transforming Government since 2001
Health services are now being delivered from prisons to police custody suites in Scotland via video, it has been reported.

The move, which is expected to cut costs and deliver care to prisoners held in remote parts of Scotland, is being rolled out by the Scottish Centre for Telehealth and Telecare.

Cathy Dorrian, the centre's service development manager, told the eHealth Insider website that delivering healthcare to police cells was proving challenging, in some instances due to remote locations where nurses were not on hand to help prisioners suffering from issues like mental health problems.

In a costly process prisoners were driven with security escorts to see specialists.

But a video conferencing facility has now been established between health staff based at larger custody suites and remote holding cells, the website reported.

The UK government has by contrast said it has no plans to rollout telehealth to prisons.

The idea was not ruled out, but in January last year, ministers said the government did not "currently plan to promote the use of this technology within prisons".
