Transforming Government since 2001
Newham Council is to combine 12 computer systems used for children and young people's services into a centralised database in a bid to improve services for young people whilst cutting overall costs.

The database, ChildView, is expected to bring together systems used by school admissions and early intervention teams to help simplify processes.

Brian Taylor, project manager at Newham council told Guardian Government Computing that the original set-up had caused a lot of duplication, with one team able to record information on their own system before another team used a "completely different system" to record the same information.

"So there was a lot of duplication of process," he said.

He added that the council had to maintain core information on children and young people on systems which were both under-developed and "quite old", hence the need for the new system.

Taylor added that the council wished to link the database with their partners including the police, the health service and schools, which would in turn reduce the number of telephone calls needed to get information.

It is expected that Newham Council will save over £50,000 in software licences alone, not taking into consideration any software or hardware arrangements, when the database goes live next April.
