An £80 million programme intended to make local government services available on-line has been criticised by IT managers as poor value for money.

A survey of 260 managers by Public Sector Forums pointed towards a lack of confidence in the project while the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister was judged to have a poor understanding of councils' priorities.

In an online poll the five-year initiative was viewed by just 42% as being helpful, while 37% said the 2005 e-government target had hindered their programmes.

The Public Sector Forums, an online discussion group, also found that two-thirds of respondents agreed that the £80 million could have been spent on more worthwhile projects.
