In an unsual indication of a successful e-government strategy, the Inland Revenue has claimed that it has taken "real strides forward" with its online self-assessment system. The Revenue’s chairman, Sir Nick Montagu, said: "The Revenue will continue to develop new electronic services, cleaning up our databases and improving electronic and other support for our customers and staff." The Inland Revenue has also introduced its online Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit systems.

Despite the self-congratulatory message, the Inland Revenue still has a long way to go. The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee and the National Audit Office.
