E-government is boosting public sector IT spending across the UK and Europe, according to analyst firm IDC.

A recent IDC survey of public sector organisations in Western Europe predicted that the sector will experience stronger growth than other industries. Modernisation programmes such as the e-government agenda are providing the impetus for this trend, said Massimiliano Claps, research analyst at IDC. "Public sector organisations are engaged in a transformation process that is expected to foster better services for constituents, patients and students and at the same time reduce spending," he explained.

The survey found that UK councils are currently investing significant funds to develop electronic front- and back-end solutions.

IDC also found that security, knowledge management applications and datawarehouse products are catching the eye of public sector IT departments. It said, however, that specialist solutions are also important, particularly for local government agencies.

Last month the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister launched a new Web site to support the national strategy for local e-government.
