The government has launched what it describes as “the world's most comprehensive approach to implementing local e-government”. According to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the new national strategy for local e-government gives council leaders, members and senior managers a clear view of what can be achieved, the issues they will have to tackle and what the government and local government nationally are doing to help.

Announcing the launch of the strategy, Chris Leslie, local government minister, said: "E-government presents a huge range of opportunities that will enable local government to transform the services it provides - making them more efficient and customer friendly.

“The strategy will require a strong and effective partnership between local and central government to bring about the improvements we are aiming at by 2005. To achieve these aims, we are supporting local councils by creating an environment in which local innovation and services can flourish.”
