The UK’s Office of the Deputy Prime Minister yesterday launched a new national strategy for local e-government. The strategy, published by the ODPM in partnership with the Local Government Association, aims to give council leaders, members and senior managers a clear view of what can be achieved and the issues they will have to tackle.

Announcing the launch of the strategy, Chris Leslie, Local Government Minister, said, “The strategy will require a strong and effective partnership between local and central government to bring about the improvements we are aiming at by 2005. To achieve these aims, we are supporting local councils by creating an environment in which local innovation and services can flourish.”

The strategy aims to help promote local economic vitality, by encouraging councils’ work with Regional Development Agencies and other partners to build economic communities with effective communication networks and skilled workforces.

The Government has also announced that it will invest GBP675m (E1.5bn) by 2005/06 to support councils’ infrastructure and capacity to deliver e-government.
