Transforming Government since 2001
Teesside jobseekers can boost their job hunting skills and find out about thousands of current vacancies - thanks to a series of free events taking place across Tees Valley next week. It's a good way to drive take-up of an e-government service.

Staff at five Jobcentre Plus offices will be offering advice on how to use the internet and the telephone based job search service Jobseeker Direct to search for job vacancies and find out about training courses and other local services. "We're running these events to show local people just how quick and easy it is to check out the latest vacancies from the comfort of their own home", explained Dorothy Bowmaker, Tees Valley Jobcentre Plus District Marketing Manager.

"We always advise jobseekers to check out every available job source, rather than relying on just one or two, so we're hoping these events will open people's eyes to what's available to them."

"If people are a bit nervous about using computers, we can help them overcome that. And even if they don't have a computer at home we'll be able to tell them where they can go to do their internet job searches for free."

Statistics published this month show that the Jobcentre Plus website - www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk - remains the most used jobs website in the UK, a position it has held since 2003.

"The Jobcentre Plus website has around 400,000 jobs available at any one time, with new ones being added every day", said Mrs Bowmaker. "We also have a telephone line that people can ring if they'd like to find out about vacancies, and anyone with Sky or cable TV can even search for jobs without leaving their armchair."

Every visitor to the event will receive an information pack containing details of Jobcentre Plus services, useful websites and local organisations that can offer jobsearch advice or free internet access.
