Websites of East African universities are doing poorly, the latest university ranking shows.

The web ranking by higher education search engine and directory, 4icu (International Colleges and Universities) shows the most popular university websites in Africa are those in Egypt, South Africa and Morocco.

Cairo, Cape Town and Pretoria universities top the list of 100 most popular colleges.

The top university in East Africa – Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan – is Dar es Salaam, which is position 12 in Africa.

Universities of Nairobi and Makerere are in second and third place, but take positions 17 and 20 in Africa respectively.

However, only eight universities from the six nations of East Africa are ranked in the top 100 in the continent.

The other Kenyan universities on the list are Moi (4) Strathmore (5), Kenyatta University (6) and USIU (7).

4icu ranks universities according to their use of ICT in training and research. It is, however, not based on the quality of education or level of services provided by the institutions.

In last year’s rankings, Webometrics – a research body that uses web presence and visibility as “indicators of global performance of a university” – East African colleges performed better.

There were at least 13 universities from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda ranked top in 100 Africa.

UoN maintained the top position among Kenyan universities in the Webometrics’ July 2013 edition. But it was a dwarf among giants of East Africa.

The survey by the Spanish research body placed UoN third in East Africa after Makerere, which was ranked fourth in Africa and Dar es Salaam, ranked 11th.

UoN was 14th in Africa.

The top African universities were all South African – Kwazulu Natal, Cape Town and Stellenbosch.
