"For a better living in the city thanks to ICT" is the theme of a workshop held on Friday at the El Ghazala Technopole.

The event which is organized by the Tunisian Telecom Sup Association is part of the celebration of Telecommunications and Information Society World Day.

Opening the meeting, Mrs. Lamia Chefai Sghaier, Secretary of State in charge of Communication Technologies, Internet and Free Software, stressed that Tunisia has made great strides towards the development of what she termed “digital, sustainable cities".

She noted that ICT’s are considered as an engine of economic development and social sectors, especially in during this era which is marked by the emergence of new challenges related to technology integration and the evolution of alternative media.

El Ghazala technological pole organizes conference on “ICT for better living in the city” The Secretary of State also indicated that building the knowledge economy must go mainly to the establishment of a modern communication infrastructure in different parts of the country, the anchoring of digital literacy and facilitating access to the Internet and digital services for all social categories.

She noted that in Tunisia the number of mobile subscribers has reached in February 2010, approximately 9.8 million against 3.7 million in 2004 and as many as 600 cities around the country are connected to the broadband Internet network (ADSL).

She also emphasized the services offered by e-government in Tunisia, particularly in the areas of taxation, university enrollment and payment of bills, noting that such services for businesses and individuals contribute to the building of the knowledge economy.

Mrs. Sghaier stressed the importance of exchanging expertise between cities in terms of production and dissemination of culture, knowledge, identifying new applications to develop the city, improve electronic services to citizens and provide them a better quality of life.

She emphasized the importance of promoting innovation and creativity and take advantage of new information technologies and communication in health, education, preservation of the environment and energy conservation sectors.

Papers on "the necessary infrastructure for the building of intelligent cities and villages " and "application development requirements related to services in digital cities", were presented during the conference.
