The public will be able to use e-signatures by the end of 2017 in various transactions in both the public and private sectors, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Traditional transactions required the physical presence of a person and their handwritten signature, but this will be unnecessary with electronic signatures which will also significantly decrease administrative costs and simplify procedures in the public sector.

Each person wanting to carry out an electronic transaction will be assigned a doken where their e-signature and certificate will be stored.

There are still questions over which form the doken will take. Options include a special card, a cloud app, a USB or a sim card.

It is estimated that e-government will be able to convert all documents by the end of 2017 into their electronic forms, and then assigned to a company which will provide the e-signatures along with authentication certificates.
