Monday’s visit by Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas will open new avenues of cooperation for Cyprus with countries the island has not traditionally had close ties with, according to Undersecretary to the President Constantinos Petrides.
In statements to Cyprus News Agency on Sunday, Petrides said this would be the Estonian Prime Minister’s first visit to the island, and this carried political significance, he said.
“We are expanding our cooperation with other EU countries so that we can have a sounder basis where the Cyprus problem is concerned with countries, with which we have not traditionally had ties but who nonetheless play an important role in European affairs,” he said.
Asked to comment on the fact that Estonia belongs to a group of EU member states which influence each other on various policy matters within the block, he added: “precisely; it is a country with allies and with the capacity to influence other countries with whom Cyprus traditionally did not have very close ties.”
According to Petrides, during their meeting on Monday afternoon President Nicos Anastasiades will brief Rõivas on recent developments in the Cyprus talks so that his country can act in a supportive way, but they will also discuss other matters relating to further enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
“We are building partnerships within the EU,” Petrides said.
