The government is determined to take the great digital step, President Nicos Anastasiades said Tuesday during an event to mark the launch of the European eSkills for Jobs 2014.

He said the aim is not merely to correct the past but to look to the future in a dynamic way, bearing in mind the needs of tomorrow.

President Anastasiades said information and communication technologies (ICT) are the driving force of the social and economic modernisation and their use contributes decisively to the relaunch of the economy, economic development, increasing productivity and effectiveness and promoting innovation and creating new jobs.

The president said that despite the economic crisis, ICT presents prospects and young people should embrace it with more eagerness.

“The government is determined to take the great digital step. With a plan and projects that are already underway, we are setting the Cyprus economy and society on a new course”, he added.

Communications and Works Minister Marios Demetriades, in his speech, said that technology and its skills can help handle the problems faced by the Civil Service and increase the chances of young people finding jobs.

He said that the campaign takes place at a time when unemployment is increasingly rising. The aim of the campaign is to inform citizens and mainly students of the opportunities provided by eSkills during everyday life and their careers.

Demetriades said the Communications ministry’s aims include super high-speed networks throughout the island, the digital modernisation of the government and providing effective public electronic services that are accessible to all, increasing productivity.
