Grenada has joined the Multi-Purpose Identification (MPID) system, which facilitates the easy recognition of citizens from the four Windward Islands through the use of a unique identifier which begins with the country code.

The MPID system, which is a joint initiative across Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Grenada, will allow these countries to be able to establish agreements to utilize each other’s databases to verify the authenticity of the identification of travelers.

The Government of Grenada is exploring the possibility of getting T&T’s assistance to set up a state enterprise to advance use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for a more effective government. Alvin Da Breo, Grenada’s Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications and Works, Physical Development, Public Utilities and ICT, views this as an important step in improving efficiency and delivering government services to all Grenadian nationals.

Dr Rupert Griffith, Minister of Science and Technology, along with Adam Montserin, iGovTT CEO, and Raye Sandy, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, recently received the visiting Minister for ICT talks. iGovTT is a special purpose company charged with the the design, development and deployment of advanced ICT solutions for the Government.

Information and Communication Technology will form a “major platform for growth” in Grenada, according to Information Minister Senator Winston Garraway.

Continuing a Caribbean-wide push for more ICT integration, Grenada will set up several new technology-related projects going forward, including a revamp of the country’s Centre for Excellence and Innovation, E-taxation Services and the establishment of the Caribbean Regional Communications Infrastructure Programme.

Trade Union representative in the Senate Ray Roberts tells the government that it must engage the people in consultation the same way it pursued their votes to win the February 19, 2013 General elections.

In his presentation during the debate on several Electronic Bills on Wednesday July 10, Roberts said he was deeply concern that the overwhelming majority of the population wasn’t aware of what’s in the proposed legislation already approved by the House of Representatives.

The Eastern Caribbean island of Grenada is embarking on a drive to increase the amount of local content available to Grenadian Internet users. Speaking at the launch of the relocated Grenada Internet exchange point, Hon Nazim Burke, Minister of Finance and Energy, stated that the Government of Grenada is in full support of initiatives to create Internet-based content that specifically targets the needs of Grenada and its citizens.

An Internet exchange point (IXP) is a facility that allows ISPs to keep domestic Internet traffic in a country instead of routing it through the US or Europe. According to Aldwyn Ferguson, head of the Grenada National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC), “the Grenada Internet Exchange Point and the new local DNS Root server copy are important steps in our efforts to improve the quality, efficiency and resilience of Internet services in Grenada.”
