Web initiative will strengthen cooperation between members of the community

An Internet gateway that would make two billion people across six continents feel more connected to one another? On May 3, 2011, OpenText™ and the Commonwealth Secretariat answered that question when they announced the creation of Commonwealth Connects.

Featuring the latest OpenText technology, Commonwealth Connects is an innovative portal which will allow members of the Commonwealth community — including individuals, organizations and governments — to share information, network and collaborate online.

As Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma explains, the goal of the new initiative is to foster better cooperation and communication across the entire community: "We are working with OpenText to provide a Web platform that will build a stronger Commonwealth in the 21st century and sustain its work far into the future. Signing this agreement is just the first step."

Commonwealth Connects will be introduced gradually in each country through national strategies for information and communication technology (ICT) adoption and use, strategies that OpenText and the Commonwealth Secretariat have also agreed to support jointly.

Formal launch of the Internet portal is expected to take place during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Perth, Australia, in October 2011.
