Since 4 December 2012 users have been provided with the option to verify and update their biometric data through the new electronic service called ‘Biometric Data Processing System’ available at the state and local government services portal www.Latvija.lv.

The development of this project under the European Union's Regional Development Fund will be implemented by the Information Centre of the Ministry of the Interior. The project aims to provide a single biometric data processing system (Biometrijas datu apstrādes sistēmā – BDAS, in Latvian) that will facilitate the detection of identity holders who use another person's documents and will thus protect people from identity theft.

Biometric data i.e. a digital photo and fingerprints are stored during the document issuance process of an identity card, driving license, etc. The new eService provides the opportunity for face recognition via a digital image database and finds out whether an individual’s fingerprints are also included in the system.

The current system has been collecting data that was accessible since the beginning of 2012. From 2013, the biometrical data will be updated and stored in the system every time someone gets a new identity card or driving license. By electronically submitting a request for an eService, users will be able to correct their data inaccuracies and inconsistencies, which will eventually improve the quality of information available in the database and help prevent errors from occurring.

This electronic service is available in any of the online features for authentication found at the Latvija.lv portal (the Internet, eID card, smart cards).

Moreover, the latvija.lv portal has recently launched the following electronic services:

Since 1 September 2012, the eApplication to authorities service enables users to send various types of emails (requests, complaints, proposals, etc.) to authorities.

Latvija.lv provides access to 52 eServices and contains information about 2 073 state and local government services.
