Transforming Government since 2001

A smart city called Monkh Khan for 500,000 people and an international airport will be built on the territory of Karakorum, the government reported.

The Mongolian authorities will seize 189,000 hectares of land for special state use to build a new city on the site of the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, Karakorum (Kharkhorin). The corresponding decree was published by the government of the country.

"A detailed survey of lands owned by citizens, enterprises and organizations will be carried out to calculate compensation for the transfer of land for the construction of the new city. 189,400 hectares of land on the territory of Arkhangai and Ovorkhangai provinces will be confiscated for state use," the resolution says.

The Mongolian authorities presented the concept of Karakorum as the new administrative center of the country in autumn 2023. Its area will be more than 25,000 hectares, which is 2.6 times larger than Ulaanbaatar. The three-story presidential palace will occupy 60 hectares in the new city. It is expected that the government and ministries will gradually move from Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin.

The concept of a smart city, designed for 500,000 people, assumes that 70% of the roads will be intended for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, and 30% for cars. The international airport will be built 50 km from the center of Karakorum and will be named after the grandson of Genghis Khan - Monkh Khan.
