The government of St. Kitts-Nevis has prioritized plans to digitize records at its health facilities, says Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas.

The plan to implement digital based health services was revealed during his address to delegates of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union, the diplomatic corps, local ICT officials and invited guests at Tuesday’s (Sept 23) opening of the ICT week of activities at the Marriott Resort.

Prime Minister Douglas informed that the government would be moving away from the present paper-based recordkeeping of the country’s medical records.

“The need for timely access to medical records, particularly in times of emergency, is real. The need for high-resolution imaging in order to make accurate and sometimes life-saving diagnostics and decisions is very clear. Our commitment to ensure the highest possible level of healthcare within the Federation has impressed upon us the importance of ICT based compilation and transfer of medical data being a Federation wide priority,” he said.

He commended the CTU for its role in bringing ICT policy discussions on matters related to agriculture, tourism and financial services that were described as important to the country’s developmental strategies. He explained that the organization had been “a valuable resource to St. Kitts and Nevis” in the transformation of the country out of the mono-cultural, sugar-based exporting economy.

The CTU/ICT week of activities is being held under the theme, “Appropriate Policies for the Information Age”. It is a week of planning, training and strategizing to improve local and regional ICT capacity building and sensitization.

The information technology and telecommunications minister, Hon. Glenn Phillip, reported that the Federation has embraced information and communications technologies as essential facets of national development and economic growth.

“The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is actively pursuing the implementation of its e-Governance platform, which would enhance the government services. E-Government and the government-wide area network would, upon completion, offer a greater level of accountability and transparency to the processes of doing business with the State,” said Minister Phillip.

He expressed belief that there would be increased integration of ICTs with the services sector that would transform the economies of all CTU member states into knowledge-centered societies.
