St. Kitts/Nevis has deemed e-government as one of its significant national policies on development and recognises the importance of bridging the digital divide and establishing an e-society as a means of improving the country’s sustainable development.

“In view of the friendship, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) agrees to co-operate with the government of St. Christopher/Nevis in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), to promote the level of digitisation in the Federation.

“And the important part of making the process self-sustaining in training of public servants and a wide cross-section of society.

“Therefore, assistance in training will be a critical aspect of the e-government project,” the letter of intent between the government of St. Christopher/Nevis and the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on Cooperation in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) said.

The two-page document signed by St. Kitts/Nevis Minister of State for Information and Technology, Sen. Nigel Carty and the Republic of China on Taiwan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, James C.F. Huang continued that the “cooperation will contribute to the enhancement of the administrational efficiency of the government of St. Christopher/Nevis and the competitiveness of its people.”

Officials from both St. Kitts/Nevis and the Republic of China have begun working out the details which will lead to the signing of the agreement establishing the framework for future cooperation in information and communication technology.

With the closure of the sugar industry, St. Kitts/Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the challenge was to move the Federation from a largely agricultural-based economy to one of services led by hospitality, financial and information communication technology services.
