Endorsing the e-government award of distinction in each of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, and as a Gulf unified prize, reiterates views and expectations of the bloc's leaders for realizing Gulf integration, a senior Bahraini official said on Monday.

Bahrain's Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa made the statement at the opening of the 4th GCC e-Government Award, Conference and Exhibition 2015 here on Wednesday.

The event reflects keenness by the GCC countries to utilize the latest in the world of information and communications technology (ICT), Sheikh Mohammed said.

Since 2005, Bahrain's government has worked on enhancing the e-transformation and through the Informatics and e-Government Authority, the Kingdom was able to deliver a large number of online services to citizens and residents, he noted.

He further indicated that Bahrain has made achievements within the most recent UN e-Government Survey of 2014, ranking 1st in the Middle East and the Arab World and 18th globally within the e-Government Readiness Index.

Addressing the event, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed said that the GCC countries have achieved remarkable accomplishments in the ICT sector.

He added that they succeeded in doing so over a record time. Moreover, the high ranks of the GCC states enabled them to leave a stamp on the international arena - grabbing the attention of all other countries, he said.

The minister referred to an initiative Bahrain made in 2008 at a preparatory meeting for the GCC leaders to launch a distinction award on the Gulf level.

It aimed at spreading the culture of distinction on in the Gulf as well as enhancing the GCC integration in the ICT field.
