E.government is a crucial factor to help along overall development in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the choice tool to meet expectations of the younger generations in particular, stressed Minister of Electricity and Water and Acting Minister of Information and Communications Salem Al-Uthayna on Sunday.

The minister was addressing the opening session of the 2nd GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) e-Government Award and Conference. He was addressing those attending on behalf of the sponsor His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

The minister said today's communities and societies base their future on the firm grounds of action, productivity, transparency, and sound planning. Such plans are only successful with help of the latest technology and media of use in e-government.

The conference aims to bolster cooperation in this field and build new communication channels. It discusses technical, legislative, and human factors challenges. The workshops of the three-day event serve as pilot planning and help further establish effective mechanisms and modes of exchange of information, he said.

The award and conference is organized by the Kuwait Central Agency for Information Technology, and the items on the agenda are related to five categories; e-Services, e-Content, G2G Projects, Development Sector Portal, and Government Portals. The panel of judges at the award is chaired by the Academic Programme Officer of the United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) Dr. Elsa Estevez.

The mission of the UNU-IIST which is located in Macao, as stated on its official website, is "to help developing countries strengthen their education and research in computer science and their ability to produce computer software." The UN body also offers "a range of courses, and organise or co-organise other events, including internal seminars, training schools, workshops and conferences."
