The 8th GCC e-government committee meeting concluded in Kuwait with a number of important recommendations that will help boost e-government programmes in the GCC countries.

The e-government committee comprises heads of e-government authorities and programmes in the GCC countries. The meeting that concluded on Monday, 31st January, was held under the chairmanship of the UAE represented by H.E Salem Khamis Alshair Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Information Authority (GIA) and Salem Al Housani, Deputy Director.

In its last meeting, the committee has approved the request by the Secretariat General to the Ministerial Council demanding establishment of the e-government ministerial committee.

The committee was briefed on a proposal by the Sultanate of Oman to launch a joint e-government declaration for the GCC countries. Other issues discussed included preparations for the 2nd GCC e-government award, conference and exhibition to be held in Kuwait later this year.

They also discussed a proposal by Kuwait regarding criteria for the GCC e-Government Award and its categories. Two new categories have been added to the award; one for the official portal of the country and another for specialized portals. Criteria for these two categories will be announced later this month.

The committee agreed to act upon the recommendations of a joint teamwork regarding exchanging information, experiences and framework agreements and other IT products.

The committee thanked the UAE e-government on its initiative to set up a website for the committee on the URL (gccegov.org). The committee also recommended the Secretariat General to register the domain (gcc) to be used by websites and portals in the GCC countries.

The next committee meeting will be held at the Secretariat General Headquarters to look into the Ministerial Committee meeting after approving it by the Ministerial Council.
