Myanmar is to build an open source e-government platform with help from Vietnam.

The first phase of the platform will be launched at the end of the year with functions allowing officials to manage citizen data and exchange information with other ministries and local governments, according to Vietnamese media reports.

The platform will be upgraded in 2015 with cloud technology, and capabilities to handle more complex datasets and mobile users, it added.

In Vietnam, Da Nang city launched an e-government platform based on open source in July. Capital city Hanoi and the Ministry of Health also have open source e-government platforms.

The biggest advantage of using open source is the level of customisation it allows, Dr Nguyen Hoai Duc, Head of Da Nang’s Smart City Programme told FutureGov. E-government solutions need to be customised to fit tightly with local regulations, and open source allows IT officials to customise their applications to suit their needs.
