The Myanmar Information and Communication Technology Development Corporation (MICTDC) held its first Internet Freedom Forum in Yangon on the 1st of June.

The Forum discussed the role of the Internet and information and communications technologies (ICT) for business and economic development in Myanmar, and provided the correct regulation, its ability to reduce corruption in Government departments.

“Government departments and business corporations need to use ICT very much. It’s time consuming and inefficient to fill forms by hand. Besides, machines don't take bribes. Cases of corruption will reduce if we use ICT rightly," said Nay Phone Latt, Executive Director of Myanmar ICT for Development Organization (MIDO).

Myanmar currently lags far behind its ASEAN neighbours countries on its level of Internet penetration with only 0.8% of the population having access to the World Wide Web according to the Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT) 2010 official statistics.

“In today's modern age, internet is an essential tool for everyone. Nowadays one out of three people use the internet all over the world. Using internet has its own pros and cons, but advantage outweigh disadvantage,” said Khun Oo, President of the Myanmar Computer Federation.

MIDO competed against other projects from all over the world at IGF Incubator Project competition sponsored by Freedom House and hosted the Myanmar Internet Freedom Forum 2013.

"We need corporation from all. We can use internet freely but it is not enough and still not safe to use," said MIDO Director, Nay Phone Latt.
