There are significant disparities in the eGovernment preparedness across Asia Pacific despite senior managements having good understanding of its importance to better serve the public, a survey shows.

The survey revealed that Australia and Singapore are two of Asia Pacific's most technologically advanced countries, but almost 50 per cent of Australian government IT executives said there are few systems and processes in place to enable their organisation to leverage the Internet.

In contrast, only 14 per cent of Singaporean executives concurred.

The first Asia Pacific eGovernment Readiness Survey 2006 was conducted by Fairfax Business Research and sponsored by leading content and business process management solution provider, FileNet.

It surveyed IT executives in 112 public sector organisations in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore.

Hong Kong and Singapore provided the highest rate of Internet-enabled process automation at around 80 per cent.

More than 56 per cent of interviewees reported that they had no records management systems in place.

According to the survey, the respondents appeared to understand the value of eGovernment, with 97 per cent of their senior management having either good or some understanding of the processes required to better serve citizens.

The report's author, Peter Hind, an IT industry analyst for 25 years, said: "Public sector organisations will continue to face challenges finding the necessary budgets to meet the growing demand for their services".

"The only way this can be achieved is by providing these services more efficiently. This research suggests eGovernment could help them do just that," he said in the report.
