On 14 March 2013, Danielle Gagnaux, the chancellor of Fribourg canton and André Simonazzi, the Federal Council spokesman, launched a revamped version of the ch.ch portal, which provides a quick way of finding information about the confederation, cantons and communes.

Focused on the information needs of the public, the updated ch.ch portal includes on a single platform all the information from the federal, cantonal and municipal authorities that people need on a daily basis.

People address a large number of questions to the state and the authorities. The Federal Chancellery alone receives around 1 200 emails per month. These emails, as well as letters and phone calls show that there is a great need for the public to find the information they need. However, due to the Swiss federal structure, citizens sometimes find it difficult to find out which authority to address their request to. The renewed website allows for quick and easy access to online information as the needs of users will determine the type of information that will be featured online. Furthermore, information will be presented in the user’s native language.

Launched in 2006 the portal has been completely renewed after six years of operation to fulfil the needs and habits of users. The ch.ch portal can be accessed through either smartphones or touch-pad devices. All texts are available in five languages (English, French, German, Italian and Romansh). Like most public websites, ch.ch is also entirely accessible to people with disabilities.

The annual management fee of ch.ch amounts to 15 Swiss cents (approx. 12 euro cents) per capita, or a total of CHF 1.2 million (approx. €1 million), provided half by the federal government and half by the cantons. In a study conducted before the redesigning of the portal, the Federal Chancellery found out that providing information online is a very efficient form of communication for the public authorities.

The portal is an integral part of eGovernment Switzerland. The objective of the digital administration strategy of the Federal Council is to allow the public and businesses to quickly handle important administrative matters with the authorities electronically; ch.ch is a major tool for achieving this goal.
