A preliminary study on electronic vaccination records has been launched by the eHealth Suisse Steering Committee as part of country-wide eHealth efforts.

The committee intends to carry out its first national eHealth initiative by launching an electronic vaccination record project. Prior to this, a preliminary study is being conducted to examine the organisational, technical and financial aspects of electronic vaccination records. The study is expected to conclude in January 2012. If the findings are positive, an implementation and pilot phase will follow in two to three years.

Initially, the focus was on ePrescribing, according to the mandate clarification of 14 April 2011. The committee maintains that an electronic version of the current paper vaccination record is more likely to be implemented quickly throughout Switzerland. However, ePrescribing remains an important issue and will continue to be developed through the canton pilots.

Background information:

The use of an electronic vaccination record is optional in Switzerland, as citizens can continue using its paper-based equivalent. It is provided free of charge and there are no subscription costs.

Third-party (doctors or pharmacists) access to data is forbidden, unless granted by the owner of the record. Authorised health professionals can verify, correct or complete vaccinations, as well as validate an electronic vaccination record.
