The 'Digital Austria Explorer' (Digitales Österreich Explorer, in German) - a unique eGovernment initiative providing all Austrians with access to over 1 000 forms and 350 government procedures in just one click - was officially presented on 1 June 2010, during a press conference held in Vienna.

Developed by a global Information Technology (IT) company in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Chancellery, the 'Digital Austria Explorer' is a toolbar that once freely downloaded and installed on a PC, offers a virtual office environment, combining the services of the national eGovernment portals for businesses 'USP.gv.at' and for citizens 'HELP.gv.at'.

Furthermore, via this electronic platform citizens can search for services, use eGovernment applications like Finance Online, request for a certificate and find useful information about daily services such as doctors, pharmacies, social security benefits, public transports etc.

"Austria has long been a leader in Europe, when it comes to eGovernment initiatives. To further increase the popularity of eGovernment nationwide, simple and easy access are required. The 'Digital Austria Explorer' offers Austrian citizens exactly this: Just one click and all national eGovernment services become available - well presented and structured. It also includes an integrated search engine and a field dedicated to news. Accessing virtual offices has never been as simple and straightforward as now" stated Dr. Manfred Matzka, the Austrian Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Chancellery.

Security and privacy are issues of particular importance for eGovernment applications. This has also been reflected in a survey conducted by an online market research company on behalf of the IT company that developed the system; in a nutshell, the Austrians prefer to have a web browser with the following characteristics: security (66.9 %), speed (61.2 %), privacy protection (59.6 %) as well as functionality (59 %); these are requirements, which apply even more strongly for eGovernment applications.

The services of the 'Digital Austria Explorer' will be constantly expanded and continuously adapted to the requirements of the modern administration.
