Transforming Government since 2001
An e-government technology developed in the UK is to be tested across EU member states in an e-participation project

The Public-i webcasting service has been selected to form the basis of eParticipate, an 18 month European wide validation project, it was announced on 22 April 2005. eParticipate, otherwise known as the eParticipation Trans-European Network for Democratic Renewal and Citizen Engagement, is aimed at providing an integrated, open standard web based network for public bodies to increase citizen participation in the democratic process. This is part of the Trans-European Network (eTEN) project to encourage citizen participation at local level through technology.

Partners include the National Microelectronics Application Centre and Fingal CC from Ireland, Public-i and Waverly BC from the UK, Ayuntamiento de Getafe from Spain, and Vrutky City Hall from Slovakia.

The latter will explore deployment and the possibility of customising the webcasting platform to other languages.

Keith Young, chief executive of public-i, said: "Our winning this bid and the role we are to play in eParticipate is a powerful endorsement of the public-i webcasting platform and its contribution to the e-government programme. It clearly evidences that the UK leads the way in how these technologies have been developed to specifically assist Local Authorities to re-engage with their communities."
