Transforming Government since 2001
European Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society Erkki Liikanen said here on Monday that e-Government has become a priority throughout Europe and urged the public to meet the challenges.

At a press conference held at the headquarters of the European Commission, the commissioner said that e-Government is the use of ICT (information and communication technology) combined with organizational change and new skills to create an open and transparent government. "Two years ago e-Government was mainly in the North of Europe and most public sector websites were about information provision only. But today we observe that e-Government has become a priority throughout Europe," he said.

E-Government is aimed at offering better public services and increasing efficiency in the public sector. The focus is shifting from technology to solutions, from experiments to large-scale usage, from information-only to interactive communication and transactions, the commissioner stressed.

He also emphasized that the European Union (EU) should build onthis momentum and accelerate the advancement of e-Government so that Europe gets the world-class public administration that it needs.

Calling e-Government pillar of the e-Europe 2005 Action Plan, Liikanen said the EU should make the advantage of the broadband and the multi-platform environment to ensure that citizens can access their e-Government services through digital TV, mobile and PC terminals.
