The network was jointly developed by a German telecommunication company, the University Hospital Charité of Berlin and a medical and information technology supplier in Teltow to monitor up to 500 high-risk patients with advanced chronic heart failure. The project will be funded with a total of €1.53 million from the economic stimulus package (Kojucturpaket II) and, thus, with subsidies from the German federal state and separate German states.
This first comprehensive telemedicine project in the context of patient care should help to reduce duplicate examinations and expensive hospital stays, as well as to improve the life quality of high-risk cardiology patients. For this reason, a German health insurance company concluded an integrated care contract with both hospitals.
"This telemedicine network makes Brandenburg a pioneer and impressively demonstrates that, the joint commitment of partners from government, the health sector and business can significantly improve patient care. Above all, medical care in rural areas will benefit", said Anita Tack, Minister of Environment, Health and Consumer Protection of the Brandenburg State, at the public presentation.
After the official launch of the telemedicine network, the cardiologists and GPs in Brandenburg will be informed about the availability of the services. The specialists, along with the two hospitals taking part in the project, will identify the appropriate patients and suggest they participate. The first patients will be connected to the network with telemedicine devices in their homes during the autumn of 2011.
