Transforming Government since 2001

MTN Rwanda has launched a new service on it MTN Mobile Money platform which will make it easier for parents to pay schools fees.

"It has not been very easy for schools to collect on time school fees for children and this is why as MTN, we decided to invest in a platform that would enable parents pay school fees for their children conveniently," Norman Munyampundu, General Manager of MTN Business said during the launch of the service in Kigali last week.

MTN Rwanda is the market leader in Rwanda. Munyampundu said, "Parents can send the fees directly to schools via mobile money, thereby eliminating the need to queue in banks or worry about their children spending their school fees on other things."

The introduction of this service is in response to the growing demand for convenient payment solutions. The Rwanda government is steadily developing a cashless economy.

"This service is already being rolled out in about 21 schools such as, High School Academy, GS Muyange, King David Academy, GS Remera Protestant, GS Nyanza, Trinity International Academy, among others with hope to bring more on board very soon," Munyampundu said.

"I'd like to thank MTN for helping to integrate the use of ICT in the education sector. Not only is this fees payment another important milestone, but other initiatives like setting up of computer labs in schools under the MTN Foundation greatly lifts the quality of education in schools.

MTN's investment in education for all has had a very significant impact in Rwanda," Theogene Kayumba, the Director of ICT in the Ministry of Education said. He commended MTN for continuing to drive innovation and deliver services to the public. Schools registered on the payment service must have unique pin numbers and identification numbers for each student.

Notifications will be sent in the form of messages to the mobile devices of the subscribers anytime a transfer is made.

"We have also provided the schools with a reliable interface to be able to monitor all transactions that have happened," Munyampundu said.

A lot of innovations have been done on MTN Mobile Money with introduction of a number of services which include payment of water bills, which was recently launched and is supporting many MTN customers, payment of TV subscriptions among others.

MTN Mobile Money today has over 3.1million subscribers, which is a big support to the government in its endeavors of creating a cashless economy in the country.
