97 percent of the construction of the National Data Centre is complete, Patrick Nyirishema, the Head of Information Technology at Rwanda Development Board, disclosed yesterday.

The centre will provide a wide range of IT related services to all public institutions and other organisations including, hosting of all e-Government facilities, solutions, applications and web services.

"We have completed the physical construction of the centre and what is remaining is the installation of back-up power," he said.

Nyirishema added that the construction of the monitoring and operation room was also complete.

"It would be operational by now, but experts advised us to purchase some special equipment which will be used to connect it to backup electricity supply in order for it to last long without any technical hitch," he explained.

Nyirishema stressed that after the completion of the installation of the backup power and final acceptance testing, the centre would be operational.

It will also provide hosting facilities for both hardware and software applications for various government institutions and public service organisations.

Nyirishema said that the centre would also facilitate the interconnectivity for interested parties in the private sector.

He noted that they had so far spent 3.8 million Euros on the construction
