Since 16 February 2012 citizens have been able to submit online via the eTax website their annual tax returns to the Public Revenue Office (PRO).

Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, deputy Minister of Information Society and Administration Marta Arsovska-Tomovska and the Director of the PRO, Goran Trajkovski presented the new service a few days before its launch.

Tax returns can be submitted from any place and at any time by filling in personal data and using an electronic signature obtained from one of the country's two registered issuers of digital certificates ('Makedonski Telekom' and 'KIBS'). The electronic signature costs about 900 denars (approx. €14,5) and can also be used for all other electronic services.

Ivo Ivanovski, the Minister of Information Society and Administration was the first to submit his tax return electronically. He said in this regard: "The whole procedure takes five minutes. I would like to invite all citizens to use this opportunity to register as soon as possible and obtain their electronic signatures, which would not only be used for this service, but also for a great number of other services offered by the Government and public institutions."

He added that if someone cannot use the online system to submit his tax return, someone else - having his electronic signature - could do that on his behalf.

The PRO representatives explained that electronic signatures used by banks for eBanking services could also be used for eTax returns, provided they have been issued by one of the two aforementioned registered issuers of digital certificates. Additionally, a citizen who has received a signature for electronic services of other institutions, such as the Employment Agency, Customs Office, the Central Registry etc., can also use it for online tax submission.

This service is intended to contribute to cutting administrative costs, increasing voluntary tax payment and simplifying tax procedures for businesses. The advantage of the online submission of tax returns, the PRO representatives explained, is that all stages and steps have been adapted to the users' needs, and users do not need to visit the PRO premises.

It is expected that the PRO will receive approximately 200 000 tax returns in 2012. In January 2012, 8 000 tax returns had already been submitted; the deadline for submissions is 15 March 2012. Even those tax returns that will be submitted at 23:59 on 15 March 2012 will be considered as valid.
