Village in Moruga may not have the best cellular and telephone reception due to its towering mountains, but the southern paradise can now boast of high-speed internet access.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Rupert Griffith and Moruga/Tabeland MP who is also Minister of Gender, Youth and Child Development, Clifton De Coteau officially opened the fourth Star.TT Access Centre located at the Marac Community Centre.

During his address De Coteau thanked Griffith “for making Marac number four on the list of access centres to be completed and opened”, while extolling the naturalistic and touristic virtues of the area.

Griffith said the facilities would decrease residents’ trips to various towns to access Internet services.

“Congratulations to the Marac community, which is the last village in Moruga, but is now the first to have access to broadband and high-speed Internet, where none existed previously. This Star.tt access centre will now provide residents of Marac and surrounding areas with access to the Internet and many Government services - thereby decreasing the need to commute to Princes Town, San Fernando and Port-of-Spain to access these services,” Griffith said.

Marac-born resident and 2014 Junior Soca Monarch, Jeromy Rodriguez who was a guest performer, also showed off his tech-savvy computer literacy skills to those present.

Rodriguez expressed “great pride, joy and excitement” as the facility was opened near to his home.

Prior to his performance, Rodriguez introduced himself as the “2013, 2014 and soon-to-be 2015 Junior Soca Monarch” and said that he believed the new access centre would increase the level of interaction among residents of the constituency over time.

“I live just five minutes from this centre, so I plan to use it a lot. This is the most high-tech stuff I’ve ever seen in Moruga and I’m glad they brought it here because it will increase the communication among the population of this area and the love for each other and this community,” he said.

Rodriguez also stated his belief that the youngsters in Moruga would benefit greatly from the centre.

The Star.TT initiative was launched on February 11, 2014, with four ICT access centres now opened in Penal, Cumana, Guayaguayare and now Marac. Thirty-two user-friendly, community-based ICT enabled access centres are scheduled to be opened throughout the rural and under-served areas of TT with the intention of providing quick access to information, training and e-Government services.
