When people hear the term broadband internet they immediately associate it with high speed internet access that far surpasses its dial-up counterpart.

While these people are absolutely accurate, there is a tendency to underestimate the countless opportunities that become available through this advancement in technology. High speed data transmission provides access to an expansive range of resources, services and products in education, health care, e-commerce, e-government and public safety and security. Every year, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) celebrates World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD) to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the internet and other Information Communications Technologies (ICTs) can bring to societies and economies. It also highlights ways in which countries can bridge the digital divide. In an effort to truly establish the link between broadband internet connection and development, the ITU has themed this year’s commemoration, “Broadband for Sustainable Development”.

In keeping with the theme, blink | bmobile recently partnered with the Ministry of Education and Samsung to launch the Samsung Smart School Solution, an E-education technique developed by Samsung. blink | bmobile will be contributing to this revolutionary initiative by providing network connectivity and expertise on the ICT platform.

At the same time Samsung will be providing the smart class kit made up of software, 20 specially designed Samsung tablets and an interactive white board screen to each of the 20 schools across Trinidad and Tobago earmarked for the pilot. The hardware and software is designed to help teachers manage classes better and engage with students more effectively. At the launch, Executive Vice-President of Government and Enterprise Services, Rakesh Goswami noted, “there is a direct correlation between a country’s success, the development of its ICT sector and the actual use of ICT by individuals and businesses.”

This initiative comes on the heels other groundbreaking projects that blink has implemented to further the reach of its broadband infrastructure. In April, the company launched the Blink Wireless Pilot Project simultaneously in Sangre Chiquito and in Golden Lane, Tobago. LTE is the fastest commercially available wireless broadband access technology and blink has introduced it to ensure a fast and efficient rollout of an expanded broadband infrastructure especially in underserved communities.

The blink wireless broadband powered by Huawei LTE technology will provide access speeds up to ten megabits per second and eliminate the need to physically run miles of communications cables to reach such communities. By installing antennas on already existing cell towers, communities can access the internet by simply powering on a plug and play device they receive from blink.

Another serving strategy used by blink in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology is rural ICT centres.

In March 2014, the Star.tt ICT Access Centre in Cumana, Toco was launch also powered with highspeed access from blink’s fibre-optic network. Acting CEO George Hill echoed the sentiments of the International Telecommunications Union as he encouraged partnership between the Government and stakeholders to ensure that “everyone, regardless of their geographic location, can be exposed to the same opportunities in order to develop their fullest potential.”

Such initiatives are made that much easier when you own and operate Trinidad and Tobago’s largest fiber optic network, stretching over 5000 kilometres across both islands. As Hill observed, “Epveryday is World Telecommunications and Information Society Day at blink | bmobile because we are always reaching more and more people in our mission to make Trinidad and Tobago one of the best connected nations in the region.“
