A national broadband policy will be launched this year following the opening of the telecommunications market, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama announced.

He said the regulated and transparent liberal market facilitating competition and uptake of new technology at a faster rate would enable such a policy.

"Our reduction of import duty on smart phones was calculated to facilitate a quicker uptake on technology and at the same time make it available to all, not just a few," he said.

"Accessibility must also mean affordability."

Commodore Bainimarama made the comment at the launch of the inaugural regional expo on the South Pacific Information Communications Technology organised by the University of the South Pacific in partnership with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and the Government.

He said the liberation of the telecommunications sector offered consumers better value for their money and greatly improved services, accessibility and introduction of new technology.

"Through the Regulation of National Spectrum Decree, there will be efficacies introduced to manage this limited national resource while improving the quality of services and competition in radio and electronic media," he said.

He added the introduction of the Telecommunications Levy from January this year was aimed at raising money for future ICT projects through fees levied on incoming international calls.

"These projects will include the provision of accessibility to areas of Fiji that are currently unserviced or underserviced," he said.
