Fiji has deployed a government data centre expected to make government systems and processes transparent and reduce corruption, said Prime Minister Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama at the US$20 million facility.

This centre will be used by all government agencies and Bainimarama said it will form a key component to “ensure that government data and information was secure and reliable”.

Bainimarama also said that e-government initiatives such as investment, registration and process, applications of government scholarships and online searches for government records will be built on the data centre’s hosting infrastructure platform.

“The new centre will facilitate online government services on a 24-hour basis,” announced Bainimarama. “It will serve all government agencies. In addition, statutory authorities and public companies can also access the capacity available at this facility.”

The cost of the facility was covered by a Chinese government concessional loan. Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell also participated in the project.
