The state-of-the-art Government Data Centre is expected to make government systems transparent and reduce corruption.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama made the comment at the official opening of the US$20 million (FJ$35m) facility at Berkley Crescent yesterday morning.

Cmdr Bainimarama said the centre would serve all government agencies and form a key component to ensure that government data and information was secure and reliable.

Cmdr Bainimarama said the new data centre could provide a secure and reliable hosting infrastructure platform on which e-government initiatives could be built with services such as investment, registration and process, applications of government scholarships and online searches for government records.

"The new centre will facilitate online government services on a 24-hour basis," he said.

"It will inter-alia serve all government agencies. In addition, statutory authorities and public companies can also access the capacity available at this facility," he said.

Cmdr Bainimarama said e-government did not only mean a more cost effective Government.

He said it also created modernisation, advancement, connectivity and empowerment.

"It should be noted that to obtain the optimum from any such centre - to manifest its true potential - the management of such operations must be appropriate; the personnel must have prerequisite skill sets and be constantly upskilling their knowledge base; and the equipment and technology must be advanced and constantly evolving," he said.

Cmdr Bainimarama said the project was successful because of Government's partnership with the Government of the Peoples Republic of China concessional Chinese government loan facility.

China's ambassador to Fiji, Han Zhiqiang said the completion of the project was a milestone for the Government.

Government had worked with the Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell on the project.
