The Health Ministry was yesterday handed mobile phones from the World Health Organization as part of an innovative new program to enable the early detection of communicable diseases in Fiji.

The new program, called Mobile-Health, is a means of speeding up notification of outbreak prone diseases that may cause public health concern and help avoid long waits.

WHO representative for the Pacific Dr Ken Chen says with this program - nurses and doctors in designated surveillance sites nationwide can now report cases using a special data entry screen on their mobile phone.

The data entered will then be sent as a text message to an internet web server – where the information will available to the national surveillance coordinator at Mataika House for analysis and response.
