The e-government program will ensure red-tape reduction, says the Information and Communications Technology Association.

Association executive committee member Jonathan Segal said by reducing red-tape people needed to wade through "online applications can significantly improve on an area that has long been considered a point of frustration".

This follows Fiji's first e-Government program recently launched by interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry.

"On paper, it means that certain government functions should become faster and easier to work with," Mr Segal said.

"At the end of the day, it will depend upon how well these e-government applications are planned and developed. Although nothing will change overnight, programs such as the e-government initiative give a nod to the importance of the larger ICT industry."

"It can encourage students to take a bigger interest in learning how to build these types of applications themselves.

"Governments around the world are now doing more and more of this development with the hope of making their societies more productive and Fiji is no exception," Mr Segal added.

"As to what level we'll reach, will depend on the average person's acceptance and use of these tools.

"For that to happen, we will need to encourage more Internet connectivity and PC ownership among the population. From that perspective, it's clear how programs like the these resonate throughout other parts of the economy," he said.
